Nooga Black traveled to Huntsville, Alabama on 10/13 for a Division 3 True South matchup. We traveled light with 18 players but everyone was looking to make an impact. The match started well for Nooga with flyhalf Dylan Watson getting an early penalty but Huntsville hit back with a converted try off of a kick chase. Shortly after, prop Luis Rodas and winger Victor Veloz both used their quick feet to get two tries, one was converted again by flyhalf Watson. The first half ended with Huntsville having the momentum, finding gaps in the defensive line and scoring two tries.
The second half began like the first, 3 points from the boot of Watson again! The middle portion of this half belonged to Huntsville, a penalty and a lineout maul try gave them a comfortable margin going in to the 70th minute, however man of the match Matt Herd kept elevating his play and scored a try in the 72nd minute. Nooga Black stopped a final onslaught by Huntsville, got a turnover and marched down the field, never quitting. However, the final whistle came just a bit too soon and we lost a close match, 25-30.
“This was an awesome game of rugby. Ups and downs, back and forth. Great officiating. Some really good play on both sides. We’re not satisfied with the result, but we can be very proud of our effort and I feel we represented Nooga Rugby well today. Looking forward to the rematch in the spring!” -Coach Copper
